Widely known as a director of Farmers for Change, Richmond, Centralines and more recently, Wool Growers Holdings, Mr James Aitken has seen animal production lift when stock graze high sugar grass on his family's sheep and cattle farm at Omakere, and their dairy farm in Australia "For each mouthful eaten, the animals get a lot more energy", Mr Aitken said. He first planted high sugar ryegrass AberDart last year in 6 ha at the dairy farm southwest Victoria because there was little to lose in trying a new grass in drought - stressed paddocks. The grass was sown in May and was not expected to survive its late planting, which was followed by three weeks of floods and the chilling July winds, but "miraculously" it was ready for grazing in spring. The farm manager had been doubtful that "an English grass" would proper in harsh Australian conditions but was impressed by the response of cows after their first grazing "pushing the fence to get back in". Scepticism turned to delight when their daily dairy factory receipts showed a substantial lift in milk yield, averaging two litres per cow, whenever the cows grazed on the high sugar grass. "The production from 240 cows went up 500 litres and would drop again when they went off it" Mr Aitken said. He agreed with the manager to plant 60 more hectares of AbertDart in February to take full advantage of planned irrigation.
